Festival Players of Prince Edward County was formed in the fall of 2006 when the appetite for professional theatre in the County seemed at an all-time high and was an irresistible challenge to founding Artistic Director John Burns. John worked very hard to make his dream a reality and in the summer of 2007 he did just that. The shows were expertly executed and extremely well received.
The inaugural 2007 Season line-up included:
Elizabeth Rex by Timothy Findley (GG winner)
Picton Papers by Leslie Arden
Sarah Phillips took over as Artistic Director at the end of the season in 2007 and the 2008 season saw the following shows produced in 4 venues over the month of July.
Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) by Ann-Marie MacDonald (GG winner)
Hank Williams: The Show He Never Gave by Maynard Collins
Remount of Picton Papers from 2007 season
Salt-Water Moon by David French (GG nominee)
Simply put, there is no other professional theatre opportunity in this region (not within 1 ½ hours!). While we have a very active arts community, numerous festivals, amateur theatricals, musical performers, visual artists, and so on – we have not had professional theatre. The cultural climate is ripe for the feast of talent that this festival brings. As well, the economic development of this region, hinging upon drawing cultured and educated travelers to its wineries and upscale accommodations, welcomes another high-quality entertainment option to draw and hold its visitors and the community fully supports the Festival, evidenced by their continued financial support.
