George Meanwell began his career as a guitarist in the Toronto folk trio Short Turn, and after a number of years as an orchestral cellist in Canada and England became founding cellist, guitarist and mandolinist of Quartetto Gelato, NPR’s Debut Artist of the Year (1996). Since 2010 he has been increasingly active in theatre as a performer and composer (and acquirer of instruments), appearing on stage and contributing original music to the Stratford Festival’s productions of The Grapes of Wrath (2011) and The Taming of the Shrew (2015) and the Blyth Festival’s Mr New Year’s Eve and The Pigeon King (2017). This past winter he completed his third Groundling Theatre season writing and performing the incidental music for, and acting in, Graham Abbey’s production of Shakespeare’s Lear, starring Seana McKenna. He is pleased to be returning to the County! More at gmeanwell.ca.
