Theatre Artist Residencies
Festival Players offers theatre artists a unique residency program in the charming village of Wellington, on the shores of Lake Ontario. These residencies provide theatre artists access to the resources in the Kaplan Script Library, use of The Studio Theatre facilities, and support from Festival Players artists and staff in service of an artistic project.
This as an incredible opportunity for directors, dramaturgs, playwrights, creators and artistic directors to take inspiration from the resources in the library while having access to a space to cultivate ideas in one of Canada’s most creative communities. While individuals are welcome to apply, we encourage collectives, companies and collaborators to apply as a group. Both emerging and professional artists are welcome to apply, with preference given to artists residing in Canada.
- Up to 7 days of residency
- Access to the Kaplan Script Library
- Use of our 70-seat performance studio
- Accommodations for up to 4 people in a 2-bedroom apartment with kitchen. Accommodations for additional collaborators can be made available for a fee.
- Support from Festival Players’ artists and staff.
There is no cost for these residencies, however artists are responsible for their own food and transportation. Artists in residence are expected to offer some form of public presentation; this could be a reading, performance, artist talk, etc.
There are two week-long residencies available between November 1, 2018 and February 28, 2019.
About the Library:
Jon Kaplan was a much-loved theatre critic who wrote for Toronto’s NOW Magazine for 35 years. He was a kind-hearted champion of theatre artists and had an encyclopedic knowledge of the art form. Jon passed away in 2017, and Festival Players has the honour of having inherited his extensive collection of scripts. The collection contains more than 1600 scripts, over a third of those showcasing a diverse cross-section from Canadian artists, as well as a large selection from modern, classic, international, and LGBTQ themed playwrights and performers. The Kaplan Script Library was opened in 2018 in Festival Players’ new performance studio in Wellington, with the aim of sharing this valuable collection with the community.
